Here's the amazing story of how a Boeing Pan American Airways Clipper (B-314 flying boat), caught in the South Pacific after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, made an unplanned, dangerous, and record-breaking flight home -- the long way (31,500 miles).  An astounding feat in 1941-42, mostly without maps and always without landing gear.

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly was confirmed as Secretary of Homeland Security on Jan. 20, 2017.

Many of us remember the fatal truck bombing that took place in Iraq on April 22, 2008.  Most do not know that Gen. Kelly eloquently eulogized two young Marines who died heroically in that attack -- just four days after his own son, a Marine Corps 2^nd Lt., died in combat in Afghanistan.  At the link below, you'll see an excerpt from Gen. Kelly’s inspiring speech, delivered to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis Nov. 13, 2010 and published in American Legion Magazine Oct. 28, 2011.  We've also included an outstanding story aired by CBS News on Feb. 20, 2009.

Worth watching.  This touching and tragic video reminds us all [Coast Guardsmen] of our days in similar situations.  For me, it was the first Cuban exodus in 1965, and Haitian cases in the years following.

The award came as a surprise to Midshipman 3rd Class Jonathan Dennier -- and his classmates at the Naval Academy.
