During the Cold War, an SR-71 Blackbird suffered an engine failure during a mission over the Baltic Sea, and its crew feared Soviet jets might be hunting for them.  Here's the full story of what happened in 1987.

Attacks on U.S. surveillance aircraft were not uncommon during that time.  We're told that the entire Mig-25 Foxbat line of fighters was designed, produced, and deployed for the specific mission of intercepting and shooting down SR-71’s.
